Case Study 2
Mr B was a small-scale tenant farmer, whose application to
the Trust was originally rejected. The Trust is only able to
make awards in respect of domestic arrears, and the farm had
a single metered supply feeding both the house and farm
buildings.
The Money Advice Worker at the local Citizens Advice Bureau,
who was helping Mr B to sort out his serious financial
problems, queried the Trustees decision and provided further
information to support the application. This then caused the
Trustees to review their criteria, looking to the possible
impact on the rural communities from the Foot and Mouth
Disease crisis.
The Money Advice Worker later said: “Following a
serious accident the farmer could not work but had to pay to
keep the farm going. It was certainly a big help to our
client that the Trustees reassessed their policy. It meant
that the domestic part of his bill could be met through an
award of more than £500.”
